Chapter 12

“Devin Elliott, you are not in control of me. I will go, and you won’t be able to stop me.”

At this point, she was right behind me, and I stopped so abruptly she ran right into the back of me, and I let her. I turned around, and she was mad, but that wasn’t what her face carried as far as emotion. She was hurt; she felt like I was pushing her away. Fuck, I didn’t want to share shit with her because I was so confused about where we were in this moment, but I threw her on my back, and I ran as fast as I could until I knew no one would find us. We were outside the cave of crystals, and the best thing I could do was take her in to distract her from her thoughts before I shared what I had learned and my reasoning to it all.

There were crystals of all kinds throughout this cave, and it was so deep that most hadn’t ventured as far as I had, but there were waterfalls and hidden taverns all throughout. I used to disappear in this cave for days at a time, meditating, exploring, taking in all the energy that filled this place, and embracing it as my own. Even the rarest of stones called this cave home as man was greedy and always took from the earth but never gave back, but these were hidden and always safe.

I ran the cave walls passing by, looking like we weren’t really going anywhere until we reached the violet room, or that was what I had always called it. The walls were covered in a mineral that the world called taaffeite. When I was younger, I would leave torches all throughout this cave for when I would come back and visit, but this was my favorite room by far. I put her down, and I blew at the torches. I knew I could light them, but this was new, so it took a few minutes before I actually did it. The fire reflected off the crystals, and she stood there completely mesmerized by the crystals embedded in the walls. The furthest wall had nothing but water flowing down it as it pooled around the cavern and flowed throughout the rest of the cave.

I lay on the cave floor and stared at the colors and shadows reflected on the ceiling, letting her have her moment taking everything in. She walked around, her fingers caressing the crystals on the walls and playing in the water. Eventually, she stood over me, one foot on each side of my hips, and looked down at me. Her face showed nothing, but her eyes gave me so many different emotions. The next thing I knew, she had plopped down in my lap and just looked at me while her hands made their way to my stomach.

“Devin, I’m scared, okay? Scared of making the wrong decisions, scared of failing, scared of the unknown,
